Sailing on Lake Carlyle, Illinois

Eastern National Championship Regatta

15-17 June, 2000

Hello and welcome to the first San Juan National Championship regatta of the 2000's. (Notice how deftly I skirted the new millennium issue). This will also be a first for holding the Eastern National Championship this far west, Lake Carlyle being on the very western edge of the Eastern District. Even so we are only 13 hours from New Bern, 10 hours from Charlotte, 10 hours from Columbia, SC, and 8 hours from Atlanta. For our Midwest friends we are 7 hours from Tulsa, 10 hours from Dallas, and 7 hours from Wichita. (as reported by the Rand McNally Tripmaker). Which puts this National regatta even closer to our friends in Chicago, Nashville, Indianapolis and Memphis. Carlyle Sailing Association on Lake Carlyle has been the site for many national regattas. In the past we have held national regattas for the E-Scows, Flying Scots, Snipes, Y Flyers, and the Lightning North American Championship. We have also held US Sailing's Champion of Champions Regatta twice and were the site for the Olympic Festival Events before the Atlanta Olympics. These organizations come to the middle of the country because we have a fabulous 25,000-acre lake in the middle of the Illinois Prairie where the winds almost always blow. We also have one of the finest facilities any where with plenty of parking, 3 jib cranes to hoist boats up to 3500 pounds into and out of the water, two trailer launch ramps and 800 linear feet of dock space to tie up to once you are in the water. Visit our web site at www.csa-sailingorg to see for yourself. We are trying hard to make this one of the best San Juan 21 Regattas ever. If you have never come to a national event because it seemed too far away or you didn't think you were good enough. This is your chance to give it a try. This regatta will never be any closer to you (and yes I know gas prices seem high right now) but here is your chance to sail against the best in the class. Take on the legendary Dommel family or the sly old fox from Oklahoma, Ben Sanders. Meet the newest Champion, Joe Martin and see why he and Chiswell are so fast. Come and meet the rest of us too. We're not all in the fast boat and sometimes the competition at the back of the pack is far more interesting and challenging than that at the front. You say you're not good enough - nonsense! San Juan sailing is for families and all "juaners" are welcome no matter what level of experience. Even if you decide to leave your boat at home, there will be plenty of good times, we sail right offthe shore from CSA so there's a ring side seat on the bluffs just waiting for you. Undecided, questions, give us a call. Contact Cal Guthrie at 618.236.2363 (home) or 618.222.3661 (work) or via email at cguthrie@peaknet.net
