CSA fleet Captains' meeting on January 19, 2008.

Comments by Paul Hanson, Jim Harris, Bill Clark and 2007 Racing Report.

 Paul Hanson, Race Committee Chair
Race Duty days for 2008 is as follows:

24 possible race Sundays,
Minimum 5 people to serve, 7 preferred.

I need to check on this because I thought the
club had a policy in place for liability purposes
I'll confirm this prior to writing Marks Article
2007 Race Report from FS Race Scorer (cc)
 Race statistics for 2007 race season
  • # scheduled = approx 44 (+EgyptCup, Whale)=48
  • # races counted = 34 (17 to qualif.)
  • # sailed but not counted (regattas) = 4
  • # cancelled due to NO WIND = 9
  • # not sailed by FS, due to race duty=at least 2
  • # not sailed by FS, due to light wind & late start = 2

Lightnings -->  4 days
Snipe -->         1 day
San Juan -->   1 days
FS -->            5 days
Escow -->       4 days
Cats -- >        4 days
Y's -->           4 days
Juniors -->     1 day
There was an error in the math and so I took 1 day away from the FS so they are back to 5 days, same as last year. And I took 1 day away from the San Juans because of their fleet size. If anyone has an issue with this please let me know.

 NOTES from Paul Hanson

10:30 Harbor warning & 11:00 start.
- 3 races on Sundays with 8 mph or more of wind.
- San Juan will share a start sequence with the Lightnings/ Snipes in Division 3.
- Configure course to be W/L with a gate for all fleets and removing the gybe mark.
Extended WM to be futher upwind for E's and Fast Cats. Also, E's can add laps as the Cats do currently to lenghten a race.
- Downwind finishes using a whaler at Leeward Gate to help promote race turnaround during back to back races.
- Back to Back races can be sailed prior to lunch break at discretion of RC.
- 1 pennenat (i.e. CSA Burgee) for 5 minute warning and start to simplfy RC activities.
- Hold informal RC Training for those that wish to attend on sunday of Harbor opening. I'll check with Ted Beier on this subject.
  Jim Harris' Comments

  • Number on RC staff -- It may be ok to use just one whaler (5 people) in light wind and warm weather, like July and August.  Otherwise safety would require 2 whalers (7 people).  On potential 5-person days, the duty fleet should be responsible for a second whaler if conditions change.
  • F/S duty days remain at 5.  This is ok.
  • 10:30 a.m. harbor gun (one-half hour earlier) is ok.
  • W/L course is ok I believe because most fleets sail it now and it simplifies the RC job.
  • The majority liked the idea of three races with an earlier start and winds of 8 mph or more.  We may adjust scoring by fleet to exclude this race if we want.
  • Assigning San Juans with the LIghtning start instead of ours is good.
  • The one-flag start would leave our sailors ill-prepared to sail in regattas.  Ted Beier has subsequently pointed out it also violates USSA rules.

One final note -- this message is being sent to my newly created Fleet 83 mailing list.  If you notice someone missing, if you want a second or third address added for yourself, if I'm missing a spouse who wants to be on the list, if there is a crew or former fleet member who you know would like to be on the list -- just let me know.  Thanks.
